If your car has auto air (stupid system), there is an ambient temp sensor that prevents the compressor from engaing below some temp near freeezing. Look at the temp/voltage responseof that (not sure if r12 cars have that though). Remember there is no cabin filter. Every so and then the air box has to be split and the evap cleaned. The electromagnetic clutch coil somtimes engages but does not hold.
